German original

German original

ImmenstadtMore than 3000 Buddhists from more than 40 countries meet from August 4th to 16th at the 17th International Summer Course held by the BDD in Immenstadt near the Alpsee in Allgau. The event organized by the BDD (Buddhistischen Dachverbands Diamantweg / Diamond Way Buddhist Umbrella Organization) encompasses lectures, guided meditations and Buddhist ceremonies.
In the late evening of Sunday August 9th, a 72-hour meditation on the Buddha of Compassion will begin. This meditation will be lead in turn by Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche and Lama Ole Nydahl. In Tibetan the Buddha of Compassion is called Chenresig or “Loving Eyes”. Throughout the world tens of thousands of Buddhists in around 500 meditation centers will take part in this event and recite the mantra of the Buddha of Compassion: Om Mani Peme Hung.

Information

On August 13th at 8 pm Lama Ole Nydahl will explain the basic principles of Buddhism for all interested persons in the surrounding area. The visitors will be picked up as from 7 pm from the parking lot “P3 Viehmarktplatz” in Immenstadt and be taken by bus to the lecture tent and back. The entrance fee for the lecture is 10 €.
From August 13th to August 16th Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche and His Eminence the 14th Shamar Rinpoche will complete the course with lectures and Buddhist Empowerments.
Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche was born in 1950 in Nepal and was ordained as a monk by the previous, 16th Incarnation of the Karmapa. Today the leader of several closters and builder of numerous Buddhist Stupa monuments is one of the most well known Lamas in the Himalaya region.
Kunzig Shamarpa Mipham Chokyi Lodro – also called Shamar Rinpoche – is the 14th incarnation of a lineage of teachers who were prophesied by the historical Buddha. Shamar Rinpoche fled Tibet in 1959 with the 16th Karmapa and accompanied him until the latter’s death in 1981. Thereafter, he continued the Karmapa’s projects and was responsible for the recognition of the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje.

Camp

The 68 year old Danish Lama Ole Nydahl was commissioned in 1972 by the 16th Karmapa to teach in the West and to found Kagyu meditation centers there. He and his students bought the almost 50 hectar measuring area around Gut Hochreute, where the course will take place, in May 2007 for the foundation „Buddhismus Stiftung Diamantweg“, to establish an international meditation and meeting place.
The buddhist summer course with its up to 3000 visitors at the same time is the most important event of the year. The visitors are accomodated in tents on the area or in local hotels and pensions. Nydahl travels almost nonstop around the world to give lectures and visit the numerous buddhist centers which were foundet by him for the Karma Kagyu Tradition during the previous 35 years. He is the author of so far seven books about the diamond way buddhism, among them „The Way Things Are: A Living Approach to Buddhism for Today’s World” as well as „Buddha and Love (soon available in English)”.

Experience exchange

For some of the participants, who originate from more than 40 different countries, the meeting does not only mean meditation but also knowledge and experience exchange, because they are voluntarily committed to a buddhist center or organization
An intermational team of more than 200 helpers started already during springtime to prepare the course. The activities include the pitching of more than 4000 square meters of tent space and the complete course handling – including catering and child care. From architect over carpenter to the doctor, all of them voluntarily bring in their personal qualifications. Additional participants will help with voluntary work during the course.      hf
