Introductory Explanations Part 2 –
4 Basic Thoughts

We have 6 basic Dharma topics being taught to choose from every morning in the gompa tent during the course. So here’s our own little series of mini-explanations to share a part of this with you.

The four thoughts turn the mind and develop a deep understanding of the basic facts of our lives and direct mind towards the Dharma. These thoughts are:

  1. The precious opportunity of our current existence to encounter the teachings which lead to liberation and enlightenment.
  2. Impermanence – since all conditions are understood to be in constant change, one should use every opportunity to recognize mind.
  3. Karma, cause and effect, that shapes one’s life with one’s thoughts, words and actions.
  4. The disadvantage of conditioned existence where enlightenment is the only true and lasting joy.
